Dog & Owner Challenges

Get fit and have fun with your dog!

You and your four legged friends can have fun keeping fit by taking part in one of our great doggie challenges. These challenges have been specially devised and selected by the wonderful Karen Wild and the inspirational Jackie Wren in conjuction with Dogs Today Magazine.

You will have fun, improve your fitness and strengthen the bond between you and your dog, click on a challenge to get started!

Besides the Challenges we also have few other fun suggestions on how you can get Fit in Kit with your dog!

 

How it works

Ideally, choose one or more of the challenges below at the level of Rookie, Top Dog or Hero. Always do the warm up and cool down. It might be that you prefer a sprinting fast challenge, or a marathon effort, or both! Either way, make sure you get sponsors [download the sposnsorship form] and decide when you plan to start and how long for. You could do one challenge every day for a week, for example.

These exercises are designed for all people, of all abilities and all ages, whether you are young, old, or have mobility problems. Shape the challenge to fit you - and get fitter, too!

 

Make sure.... you and your dog have a clean bill of health

Make sure your vet and doctor can confirm that you and your dog are fit and healthy and are fine to do the exercises suggested.

Vet Richard Allport also advises, “Take water (plus bowl) along for all dogs taking part in exercises and do remember that dogs with heart problems and respiratory problems may not be suitable candidates. Fitness regimes for obese dogs should be started off as very gentle and short exercises, gradually working up.

Vet Alison Logan also advises against exercises in warm temperatures, saying:
"I really do worry about people exercising their dogs at the wrong time of day - please do not exercise in the middle of the day in hot summer weather, or whenever it is hot in general."

Alison also points out the importance of giving a dog the time to sniff and do his business. "We can slow down or stop when we want a breather - we need to remember that a dog needs the same chance."

 

Warm-up

Karen Hahm-Jones from Galen Myotherapy gives the following tips for a safe warm-up.

When warming up or cooling down before and after an activity, you can apply numerous different massage techniques to reach the wanted effect. However, on both occasions you can use a technique called effleurage.

“When warming up a dog’s muscles, you would start at the neck, shoulders, down the leg, ribcage, down the back and down the legs in long gliding strokes. This technique should be applied in fast succession, as it should aid bloodflow and prepare the body for what is to come.” 

Cool down and stretches

Dog massage

Sit comfortably and give your dog a gentle massage to cool down. Do the effleurage technique as suggested for the warm-up by Karen at Galen, only this
time, she adds, “When warming down, the direction of the strokes are the same except when going down the leg on the outside you will go back up on the inside to flush lactic acid out etc. This time the strokes are deliberate and slow to calm the dog down at the same time.”

Dog Yoga

Perform a ‘downward dog’ position for as long as is comfortable while your dog stretches out next to you. Dog yoga or ‘doga’ is growing in popularity, but do make sure you follow instructions from a qualified instructor.

Jackie Wren says, “We often do stretches alongside our dogs. If it feels comfortable and good to stretch out, anyone of any ability can enjoy this
relaxing but important activity.”

If your mobility is limited, do a lovely toe-totip stretch to end your Fit in Kit Canine Challenge. Dogs are great at stretching, so we should learn from their example.
